What is a DVI Connection?

But, another less common version is the dual link (DVI-DL). Such connection comes with a second internal connection to deliver data. Also, it can be used for high-resolution displays. This kind of connection is rarely used; however, it would be required for devices that use this kind of interface.

To tell the kind of port you need, check the pins used on the device connectors. But, it is best to refer to the manual before purchasing a cable to ensure which version you are using. You want to make sure you only purchase a digital cable when your outputs support it.

When is a DVI Connection Used?

The majority of AV equipment often comes with an HDMI connector. It can be used for sending high-quality digital video and audio signals. But, when a device has DVI connections instead of HDMI, it is used to send the video signal. Such kind of connection would be used ahead of an s-video cable, a component video cable, a composite video signal if the equipment supports such kind of hookup.

Converting DVI to HDMI

Because the digital DVI-D and DVI-version is compatible with an HDMI connection, you can have DVI to HDMI cables or converters when a piece of AV equipment requires this kind of hookup. Keep in mind that a DVI connection does not transfer audio signals.

Connecting DVI to a VGA Monitor

If you have a DVI output; however, only a VGA input on your monitor, you will need to use a DVI to VGA adapter. When using the DVI- I and DVI-A versions, purchase an adapter to convert your DVI output into a VGA interface.
